What is
Narcan?
Narcan is the best-known brand of naloxone (nal-OX-one) — a fast-acting medicine that reverses an opioid overdose. It knocks opioids off the receptors in the brain and gets breathing going again, usually inside 2 to 3 minutes. It works on fentanyl, heroin and prescription painkillers, and anyone can give it — no training, no prescription, no judgement.
Signs of an overdose

- 2Call 911Say it's an overdose. Send someone for naloxone while you stay.
- 3Give the doseTilt their head back, put the nozzle in one nostril, press the plunger all the way down.
- 4Roll themLay them on their side so their airway stays clear.
- 5Redose if neededNo response in 2–3 minutes? A second dose goes in the other nostril.
- 6Stay with themUntil help arrives. If they stop breathing, give breaths or CPR.
